Daniel Fraser

Lead Survey Systems Engineer, UK

Daniel Fraser works with testing, maintaining and repairing equipment and sensors used in subsea projects. His role is hands-on, technical and varied, with a strong focus on making sure equipment is reliable and ready for operation.

What the role involves

A key part of Daniel’s work is testing new equipment when it arrives for the first time. This is also one of the parts he finds most interesting, as it often requires technical curiosity and practical problem-solving.

He is also involved in larger and more complex project deliveries, where technical understanding, planning and close collaboration are important to ensure that equipment and systems are prepared correctly for each project.

Most important skill

For Daniel, problem-solving is the most important skill he uses every day.

”When testing new equipment, things do not always work as expected. You need to use your problem-solving skills to figure out what the issue is.”

Career development

Daniel has always been interested in maths, which made engineering a natural path for him. Since joining NOR, his role has developed significantly. He started out testing and maintaining equipment, and now works more closely with larger survey-related project deliveries that require broader technical understanding, coordination and follow-up.

This progression has given him the opportunity to take on more responsibility, build broader technical knowledge and work more closely with solution development.

Work environment

Daniel describes the work environment at NOR as:

Enjoyable. Fun. Rewarding.

For him, the team culture is one of the best parts of the job.

“Everyone can have a laugh, and we all have very similar humour.”

Being part of NOR

Daniel is proud to be part of NOR’s growth and international reputation.

“NOR is now a globally established company with a good reputation, and we are treated great as employees.”

Advice for someone starting out

Daniel’s advice to anyone entering the field is to stay enthusiastic, be curious and take every opportunity to learn.

“Always ask to try new things. Try to expand your base knowledge as much as possible.”

Outside of work

Outside of work, Daniel is passionate about learning, health and spending time outdoors. He enjoys being outside in the sun as much as possible, exploring and listening to podcasts about “unusual and interesting subjects. ”
