Edgetech 4200
Side Scan Sonar System
Description
The EdgeTech 4200 Series is a side scan sonar system made up of a topside system and a stainless steel towfish. It uses EdgeTech's Full Spectrum CHIRP technology and runs two frequencies simultaneously, with a choice of 100/400, 100/600, 300/600 or 300/900 kHz frequency sets. The datasheet states that the EdgeTech 4200 meets IHO and NOAA survey specifications.
Operating range per side is 500 m at 100 kHz, 230 m at 300 kHz, 150 m at 400 kHz, 120 m at 600 kHz and 75 m at 900 kHz. Across-track resolution is 8 cm at 100 kHz, 3 cm at 300 kHz, 2 cm at 400 kHz, 1.5 cm at 600 kHz and 1 cm at 900 kHz. The vertical beam width is 50°, with the transducers tilted down 25°. The towfish is 11.4 cm in diameter and 125.6 cm long, weighs 48 kg in air and 36 kg in saltwater, and has a maximum depth rating of 2000 m.
The optional Multi-Pulse (MP) technology places two sound pulses in the water instead of one. With MP, the EdgeTech 4200 can be towed at speeds of up to 10 knots while maintaining 100 % bottom coverage, and the operator can select High Definition Mode (HDM) or High Speed Mode (HSM) in software. Heading, pitch and roll sensors are standard. Optional sensors and equipment include a pressure sensor, magnetometer, integrated USBL acoustic tracking system, built-in responder nose, depressor, power loss pinger and custom sensors.
Topside processors are available as the portable 4200-P in a splash-proof case (20–36 VDC or 115/230 VAC), the 4200 19-inch rack mount computer or the 701-DL 19-inch rack mount interface. Data are recorded in native JSF or XTF format and output over Ethernet, and GUI software is supplied with every unit. Tow cable is coaxial Kevlar or double-armoured, up to 6000 m. Listed applications are cable and pipeline surveys, geological/geophysical surveys, mine countermeasures (MCM), geohazard surveys, channel clearance, search and recovery and archaeological surveys.
