Klein System 3000 Side Scan Sonar

Dual-Frequency Digital Side Scan Sonar

Description

The Klein System 3000 from Klein Associates, Inc. is a digital side scan sonar with simultaneous dual-frequency operation at 100 kHz and 500 kHz. The system consists of a stainless steel towfish, a Transceiver Processor Unit (TPU) and a Klein sonar workstation running SonarPro software. The datasheet states that the System 3000 meets IHO and NOAA survey specifications.

The 100 kHz channel (132 kHz ±1 % actual) has a 0.7° horizontal beam and the 500 kHz channel (445 kHz ±1 % actual) a 0.21° horizontal beam, both with a 40° vertical beam. Transmission is a tone burst selectable from 25 to 400 µs, with independent pulse controls for each frequency, and beam tilt is adjustable to 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25° down. There are 15 range scale settings from 25 to 1000 m, and maximum range is 600 m at 100 kHz and 150 m at 500 kHz.

The Klein System 3000 towfish is 122 cm long with an 8.9 cm body diameter, weighs 29 kg in air and has a depth rating of 1500 m as standard, with other options available. Roll, pitch and heading sensors are standard, and magnetometer, pressure, acoustic positioning and sub-bottom profiler are options. The TPU runs VxWorks, fits a standard 19-inch rack or table mount, outputs 100Base-Tx Ethernet LAN, accepts NMEA 0183 navigation input and draws 120 W at 120/240 VAC, 50/60 Hz, including the towfish.

The workstation is an industrial PC with Windows NT, 2000 or equivalent, recording SDF or XTF data to internal hard drive or CD/DVD-RW. SonarPro provides data display, target management, navigation, data recording and playback, sensor display, multiple display windows, survey design, networking of multiple real-time workstations and comparison with historical data. Klein offers coaxial Kevlar-reinforced lightweight cables, double armoured steel cables and interfaces to fibre optic cables, all fully terminated at the towfish end.
