Kongsberg EM 2040 MKII Multibeam Echosounder

Wide Band Shallow Water Multibeam Echosounder

Description

The Kongsberg EM 2040 MKII is a wide band, high resolution shallow water multibeam echosounder for high resolution mapping and inspection. With the EM 2040 MKII series, Kongsberg Maritime upgraded the hardware and software to increase the swath and improve the data quality of the EM 2040 series.

The EM 2040 MKII operates from 200 to 400 kHz, and the operator can change the operating frequency on the fly: 300 kHz for near bottom work, 200 kHz for deeper waters and 400 kHz for very high resolution inspection. The output sample rate is up to 60 kHz, and the shortest pulse of 14 microseconds gives a raw range resolution (CT/2) of 10.5 mm. The EM 2040 MKII uses both CW and FM chirp pulses. Angular coverage at 200 and 300 kHz is up to 170°, or up to 7.5 times water depth on a flat bottom, and a dual transducer system achieves 200° or 10 times water depth on a flat bottom.

In the datasheet coverage example (rock bottom, BS = −10 dB, NL = 45 dB, FM mode), maximum depth in cold ocean water at 200 kHz is 635 m with the EM 2040-04 transmitter and 600 m with the EM 2040-07 transmitter, and maximum coverage with dual RX is 980 m and 930 m respectively. In cold fresh water at 200 kHz, maximum depth is 1360 m (EM 2040-04) and 1300 m (EM 2040-07).

The EM 2040 MKII is listed with a TX EM 2040-04 transmitter (727 × 142 × 150 mm, 45 kg), a TX EM 2040-07 transmitter (407 × 142 × 150 mm, 23 kg) and an RX receiver (407 × 142 × 136 mm, 22 kg), plus a Processing Unit (2U for 19" rack) and a Portable Processing Unit (IP67), each 10.5 kg. The EM 2040 MKII provides 512 beams per ping with a single RX, and dual swath (optional) raises this to 1024 beams with a single RX or 1600 beams with a dual RX. Listed features include seabed image, water column logging and display, extra detections, roll, pitch and yaw stabilisation and nearfield focusing on transmit and receive.
