Kongsberg EM 2040C MKII Multibeam Echosounder
Single or Dual Head Multibeam Echosounder
Description
The Kongsberg EM 2040C MKII is a shallow water multibeam echosounder based on EM 2040 technology, used for high resolution mapping and inspection with a single sonar head or, as an option, a dual head. According to the datasheet, the EM 2040C MKII fulfils IHO-S44 Exclusive Order and the LINZ specification.
The standard operating frequency range of the EM 2040C MKII is 200 to 400 kHz, selectable in steps of 10 kHz, and the optional 700 kHz mode extends the range to 700 kHz. The operator chooses the frequency on the fly: 300 kHz near the bottom, 200 kHz in deeper waters and 400 or 700 kHz for very high resolution inspection, with the 700 kHz inspection mode contained within a 30° swath. Beam width is 1×1° at 400 kHz, and swath coverage is up to 140° with a single head and 200° with a dual head.
Using CW and FM chirp pulses, a dual head EM 2040C MKII system has a maximum depth range of 520 m at 200 kHz in cold ocean water, with a swath width of up to 700 m. In the same coverage example (rock bottom, BS = −10 dB, NL = 45 dB, FM mode), a single head covers up to 580 m across at 200 kHz. CW pulse lengths are 14, 27, 54, 135, 324 & 918 µs at 200–400 kHz and 70 µs at 700 kHz, and FM pulses are 3 & 12 ms. With the optional EM MultiFrequency Mode, the system alternates frequency modes per ping to give Multi Frequency Backscatter of up to 5 frequencies in a single pass.
Two sonar heads are listed: the EM 2040C MKII head, 18.8 kg out of water and 8.4 kg in water with a 50 m depth rating, and the EM 2040CX head, 26.1 kg out of water and 17 kg in water with a 1500 m depth rating. The Processing Unit (2U for 19" rack) and the Portable Processing Unit (IP67) each weigh 10.5 kg. Included features are seabed image, water column display and logging for SIS users, FM chirp, roll and pitch stabilisation, yaw stabilisation with dual head and transmit and receive nearfield focusing; dual swath, extra detections and water column phase logging are optional, and a laptop, Hydrographic Work Station (HWS) and monitor can be delivered on request.
