Kongsberg EM 2040P MKII Multibeam Echosounder
200–700 kHz Shallow Water Multibeam Echosounder
Description
The Kongsberg EM 2040P MKII is a shallow water multibeam echosounder based on EM 2040 technology, intended for high resolution mapping and inspection. According to the datasheet, the EM 2040P MKII fulfils IHO-S44 Exclusive Order and the LINZ specification.
The EM 2040P MKII covers 200 to 700 kHz: the 200–400 kHz frequency range is included, while the 600 kHz and 700 kHz modes are optional. The operator selects frequency on the fly, using 300 kHz near the bottom, 200 kHz in deeper waters and 400–700 kHz for very high resolution inspection. The 600 kHz wide area high frequency mapping mode gives a 100–120° swath width, and the 700 kHz inspection mode works within a 30° swath. At 200 and 300 kHz the EM 2040P MKII covers up to 170° on slopes and piersides, or up to 7.5 times water depth on a flat bottom.
The EM 2040P MKII has an output sample rate of up to 60 kHz, and its shortest pulse of 14 microseconds gives a raw range resolution (ct/2) of 10.5 mm. In the datasheet coverage example (rock bottom, BS = −10 dB, NL = 45 dB, FM enabled), maximum depth in cold ocean water is 550 m at 200 kHz with 830 m maximum coverage, and 1250 m in cold fresh water. With the optional EM MultiFrequency Mode, the EM 2040P MKII alternates frequency modes per ping to give Multi Frequency Backscatter of up to 5 frequencies in a single pass.
The EM 2040P MKII sonar head is depth rated to 30 m and measures 482/414 × 298 × 166 mm (L × W × H, with/without removable handles). With a titanium backlid the sonar head weighs 23 kg / 20 kg in air and 4.7 kg in water; with an aluminium backlid it weighs 19.5 kg / 16.5 kg in air and 1.7 kg in water. Included features are seabed image, water column display and logging for SIS users, FM chirp, roll, pitch and yaw stabilisation and transmit and receive nearfield focusing. Dual swath, water column phase logging, extra detections and an integrated AML SVT sensor are optional, and a laptop, Hydrographic Work Station (HWS) and monitor can be delivered on request.
