Kongsberg Mesotech 1071

High Resolution Scanning Sonar Head

Description

The Kongsberg Mesotech 1071-Series 3000 m High Resolution geared sonar head (P/N 974-23030000) is a 675 kHz scanning sonar head with digital telemetry. The datasheet lists bottom clearance, body recovery and underwater construction as target applications. The sonar head is compatible with the MS1000 and MS900D surface processors; the MS1000 processor is required to use the advanced features and high resolution of the head.

The Kongsberg Mesotech 1071 sonar head uses a fan transducer with a 0.9° × 30° beam (nominal) and scans 360° continuously with a mechanical step size of ≥ 0.225°. Range is 0.5–100 m typical, with 150 m obtainable, and range resolution is ≥ 19 mm at 1500 m/s speed of sound and 25 µs transmit pulse. Nominal scan speed is 11 s/360° at 10 m and 36 s/360° at 100 m, both with 1.8° step size at 230 kbits/sec. Transmit power is selectable as OFF, 50 W nom or 500 W nom.

The transducer is a bare-shaft design, and the motor end is oil compensated to prevent water ingress into the main electronic stack via the transducer shaft. According to the datasheet, this head should also be considered where in-water temperatures are below 4 °C or above 20 °C, as domed, oil-filled heads may acoustically defocus outside this range. Telemetry is RS 485/RS 232, automatically sensed and configured, and the head requires 33 W at 22–60 VDC.

The Kongsberg Mesotech 1071 housing is aluminum 6061-T6 and 300-series stainless steel, with a diameter of 89 mm, a length of 488 mm and a transducer width of 140 mm. It weighs 5.7 kg in air and 2.7 kg in water, and is rated to an operating depth of 3000 m.
