Kongsberg uPAP 200-NEL Portable USBL
Portable Acoustic Positioning System
Description
The µPAP 200 is a portable acoustic positioning system for tracking ROVs, tow fish, divers and other subsea objects from a surface vessel at several thousand metres range. The µPAP operates in SSBL mode, where it measures the distance and direction to subsea transponders and computes a 3D position in local or geographical coordinates.
All µPAP models operate at 20–30 kHz (MF), with a source level of 190 dB (re 1 µPa), a 22° receiver beam, ±90° operational coverage and ±80° main coverage. The µPAP range capability is 4000+ m, depending on line of sight, the transponder's transmit power setting, the vessel's acoustic system, ambient noise and ray bending. Maximum range and angular accuracy apply within the ±80° main coverage sector; outside it, range and elevation angular accuracy are reduced, and depth input for aiding is recommended. The µPAP 200 (part no. 337711) has a motion sensor accuracy of R/P 0.2° (range ±180°) and a system position accuracy of 0.32°/0.56 % with range ±0.02 m, in X and Y direction.
The µPAP supports 560 Cymbal wideband channels and 56 FSK channels, is cNODE compatible and works in SSBL, LBL and acoustic modem modes, with Fast Track mode, responder mode and electronic beam control. The µPAP has full LBL calibration and positioning capability for position box-in, calibration and positioning, and cNODE transponder models are available for depths down to 4000 m. APOS is the operator station for the µPAP. The built-in motion sensor compensates for vessel roll and pitch, while alignment to the vessel's gyro compass must be calibrated; the system can be interfaced to the vessel heading sensor and GNSS system.
The µPAP 200 transducer has a bronze/stainless steel housing, weighs 11.7 kg and is used at a transducer deployment depth of less than 100 m, with a transducer cable length of 25, 50 or 70 m. The µPAP operating temperature is 0 to +35 °C, the storage temperature is −20 to +70 °C and the storage humidity is 95 % relative, non-condensing.
