Octans Surface
Surface Gyrocompass and Motion Sensor
Description
The Exail Octans Surface is a fifth generation survey-grade surface gyrocompass and motion sensor that provides heading, roll, pitch and heave in one unit. It is based on Exail fiber-optic gyroscope (FOG) technology with no spinning elements and holds IMO and IMO-HSC certification. Stated applications are vessel navigation, dredging and dynamic positioning.
The Octans Surface heading accuracy is 0.1° seclat autonomous and 0.05° seclat with GPS input (RMS, secant latitude = 1 / cosine latitude). Roll and pitch accuracy is 0.01 deg RMS, heave, surge and sway accuracy is 5 cm or 5 % (whichever is greater), and delayed heave accuracy is 2.5 cm or 2.5 % (whichever is greater). The unit provides Smart Heave™ and real-time heave (30 sec period), has a typical settling time of 5 min, a rotation rate dynamic range up to 750 deg/s and an acceleration dynamic range of ±15 g.
The Octans Surface has an aluminium housing measuring 275 × 136 × 150 mm (L × W × H), weighs 4.5 kg in air and is rated IP66 and IPx7. It operates from −20 °C to +55 °C and runs on 24 VDC with a typical power consumption of 18 W. Interfaces are a web-based graphical user interface, RS232/RS422 serial ports (3 outputs, 2 inputs, 1 configuration port), an Ethernet port (UDP, TCP client, TCP server), a PPS input for < 100 µs time synchronisation, and NMEA0183, ASCII and BINARY formats at a data output rate of 0.1 Hz to 200 Hz.
