Workhorse Navigator DVL

Doppler Velocity Log (DVL)

Description

The Teledyne RD Instruments Workhorse Navigator is a Doppler Velocity Log (DVL) that provides velocity and altitude updates for underwater navigation. The Workhorse Navigator can be used stand-alone or integrated with other navigation systems, and uses broadband processing for short and long-term velocity data. It is available as the WHN 300, WHN 600 and WHN 1200.

Bottom velocity long-term accuracy is ±0.4 % ±0.2 cm/s for the WHN 300 and ±0.2 % ±0.1 cm/s for the WHN 600 and WHN 1200. Single-ping standard deviation at 1 m/s is ±0.4 cm/s (WHN 300) and ±0.3 cm/s (WHN 600 and WHN 1200). Bottom tracking altitude is 1.0–200 m (WHN 300), 0.7–90 m (WHN 600) and 0.5–25 m (WHN 1200, 0.25 optional). All models have a ±10 m/s velocity range, 0.1 cm/s velocity resolution and a ping rate of 7 Hz max.

The Workhorse Navigator outputs bottom track velocity, water track velocity, altitude (4 individual measurements), error velocity, temperature, heading/tilt and acoustic echo intensity; pressure and depth and current profiling are optional. It has a 4-beam Janus array convex transducer with a 30° beam angle, NMEA0183, ASCII or binary outputs at 1200–115,200 baud over RS232 or RS422, and a 20–50 VDC input (48 VDC typical).

Each Workhorse Navigator model is available with a 3000 m or 6000 m depth rating, with weight in air from 12.4 kg (WHN 1200, 3000 m) to 20.1 kg (WHN 300/600, 6000 m). Stated applications include subsea vehicle and surface vessel navigation, survey positioning, LBL and USBL position aiding, spool piece metrology, inertial navigation correction, cable burial, deep water positioning, station keeping, pipeline touchdown monitoring and sediment tracking.
