Valeport Mini SVS – SPEED Sound Velocity Sensor
Time of Flight Sound Velocity Sensor
Description
The Valeport miniSVS is a sound velocity sensor that uses digital time of flight technology. Each sound velocity measurement is made with a single pulse of sound travelling over a known distance, at an acoustic frequency of 2.5 MHz. The miniSVS is titanium housed as standard and rated to 6000 m.
The Valeport miniSVS measures sound velocity over 1375–1900 m/s. Accuracy depends on sensor size: the 100 mm sensor has ±0.002 m/s random noise, ±0.013 m/s max systematic calibration error, ±0.002 m/s max systematic clock error and ±0.017 m/s total max theoretical error, while the total max theoretical error is ±0.019 m/s for the 50 mm sensor and ±0.020 m/s for the 25 mm sensor. Sample rate is selectable from single sample up to 32 Hz, or up to 60 Hz for sound velocity only.
The miniSVS can optionally be supplied with either a strain gauge pressure sensor (2, 5, 10, 20, 30, 50, 100, 300 or 600 bar, ±0.05 % range accuracy) or a PRT temperature sensor (−5 to +35 °C, 0.001 °C resolution, ±0.01 °C accuracy). Output is RS232 or RS485, selected by command code, at 2400–115200 baud. RS232 data can be taken directly into a PC over cables up to 200 m, and RS485 supports cables up to 1000 m and multiple addressed units on a single cable.
The sensor runs on 9–28 V DC and draws 0.25 W (SV only) or 0.35 W (SV + pressure), with a SubConn MCBH6F connector (alternatives on request). The housed type weighs 1 kg and has a titanium housing, bulkhead and reflector plate, a polycarbonate transducer window and carbon composite sensor legs. All systems are supplied with an operating manual and carry case; housed units come with a 0.5 m pigtail and OEM units with a test lead.
